The Lord Clyde

Tables outside this converted terrace of weavers' cottages look out to the wood-dappled Kerridge Edge, the fringe of the Peak District. There are good local beers in the bar if that's your thing, but it's the restrained and interesting menu that draws in the diners. Chef-proprietor Ernst van Zyl has worked in some of the world's top restaurants; his seasonally changing menu reflects the very best of Cheshire's produce. Ox cheek and oyster, salsify and kale might kick things off, with monkfish and Brussel sprouts, parsley root and pork skin to follow, showcasing the thoroughly modern approach that's championed here. The wine list is both extensive and impressive. There is now a kitchen table, for up to six people, so you can watch the chefs at work while enjoying your meal.
