Walter de Cantelupe Inn
Main Road,
KEMPSEY,
Worcester,
WR5 3NA
Situated in the village of Kempsey, just 4 miles from Worcester city centre, this privately owned and run free house commemorates a 13th-century Bishop of Worcester, who was strongly against his parishioners' habit of brewing and selling ales as a way to raise church funds. With its whitewashed walls bedecked with flowers, parts of the pub date from the 17th century. Outside, a walled and paved garden has been fragrantly planted with clematis, roses and honeysuckle, and its south-facing position can be a real sun trap. The menu is written up each day on a blackboard, with choices to appeal to both traditionalists and those seeking something more contemporary. You could begin with Worcestershire rare titbit and follow with Malvern Victorian sausages and mash, or the pie of the day. Three or four cask ales are usually on offer, including Timothy Taylor Landlord. The pub also has accommodation.

On booking I asked if room was ensuite and breakfast was included as price was £80 a night - I was told yes to both questions! If fact toilet/bath was down a corridor and breakfast was cereals and one piece of toast. Disappointing!
