The Dolphin Inn

HURSLEY, Winchester, SO21 2JY

Like most of the village, this old coaching inn with magnificent chimneys once belonged to the Hursley Estate, which is now owned by IBM. It was built between 1540 and 1560, reputedly using timbers from a Tudor warship called HMS Dolphin (today's less glamorous 'ship' is a shore establishment in Gosport). In the beamed bars you'll find Ringwood Razorback, Sharp's Doom Bar and Timothy Taylor Landlord plus Aspall and Stowford Press ciders. In addition to sandwiches, baguettes and jacket potatoes, favourites include sausage and mash; lamb's liver and bacon; and beer battered cod and chips.
