The Swan Inn
Craven Road,
Lower Green,
Inkpen,
HUNGERFORD,
RG17 9DX
Organic beef farmers Mary and Bernard Harris preside over this rambling award-winning 17th-century free house, which stands in fine walking country just below Combe Gibbet and Walbury Hill. An attractive terraced garden sets the scene for alfresco summer dining, in contrast to the heavily beamed interior with its old photographic prints and open winter fires. Almost everything on the menu is prepared using their own fresh produce; meats - 100% organic and butchered on the premises - can be bought from the farm shop. The bar menu offers well kept ales and traditional English favourites, with beef and classic Italian dishes. Fresh pasta and bread are cooked daily on the premises. Even the wine is organic. There is an organic farm shop and butchery attached to the pub (Soil Association registered) to visit, and 10 en suite bedrooms available. (Current menus appear on the inn's website.)

My wife and I took a stab in the dark and booked a table at this beautiful rural cottage. The staff were very welcoming friendly and attentive. I had the home made sausages, and my wife the burger which were both fantastic, and not over priced either. We would definately reccommend the Swan to anybody who enjoys good food and we will certainly be revisiting to sample something else from their tasty menu.
