High Road, HOUGH-ON-THE-HILL, Grantham, NG32 2AZ
This 17th-century stone inn ticks all the boxes. Named after former owner Lord Brownlow, it still looks, inside and out, every inch the country house it once was. Enjoy a pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord or Black Sheep in the convivial bar, while browsing the menu for AA-Rosette standard dishes such as black treacle pork tenderloin, cider and maple braised belly, butter mash, parsnip purée, crackling and red wine jus; and pan-seared steak, hand-cut chips with sauce au poivre or garlic butter. The landscaped terrace invites outdoor drinking and dining, although please note that children must be eight or over to be allowed in the pub, and only at lunchtime from Wednesday to Saturday.
