The Black Jug

'When our week's work is over, to the Jug we repair'. So begins some mid-Victorian doggerel about this busy town-centre pub, a replacement for the 19th-century original which burnt down in the 1930s. Inside, classic wood panelling and flooring, old furniture and bookcases; outside, a conservatory-cum-courtyard. All-day meals (from noon) are freshly prepared using local ingredients wherever possible, typically crab linguine with ginger, red chilli and coriander; sweet potato and coconut curry with jasmine rice; smoked duck breast with pecan, avocado and mango salad; and smoked haddock and salmon fishcakes.
