Norwich Road, Edgefield, HOLT, NR24 2RL
Bought by three ambitious co-owners nearly ten years ago, this 17th-century country inn on the edge of a lovely village has been transformed into a thriving local and celebration of all things Norfolk, both on the plate and in the glass. The lovely tranquil setting at the fringe of the village allows for a peaceful garden, whilst locals barter their fresh fruit and vegetables over the bar for a pint or two, practise darts or bar billiards and quaff the Old Spot bitter brewed by local Wolf Brewery - what else. An impressively versatile menu emerges from the kitchen, utilising forgotten cuts of locally sourced meat and produce from the pub's adjoining allotment. If it's genuine 'nose to tail' dining you're looking for, the honey, Colman's mustard and marmalade glazed pork ribs, followed by the slow-cooked belly of pork with smoky bacon beans, apple chutney, black pudding and crackling should fit the bill. Tapas-style starters called 'Iffits' include deep-fried 'popcorn' cockles, and a Kilner jar of potted pork which are ideal for sharing. If pork-based treats aren't your thing, then venison faggots with roast chestnut and leek mash; or East coast mussels with Old Spot ale, leeks, parsley sauce and bread to dunk may tempt, along with fish options such as deep-fried line-caught haddock, mushy peas, beef dripping chips and tartare sauce. Leek, wild mushroom and pine nut pot barley stew is one of the meat-free choices. Leave room for one of the tempting desserts, perhaps cinnamon rice crumble with vanilla shortbread. The children's indoor playroom and outdoor Piggleplay play area both prove very popular.
