The Compasses

Ipswich Road, HOLBROOK, nr Ipswich, IP9 2QR

On the spectacular Shotley peninsula bordered by the rivers Orwell and Stour, this traditional 17th-century country pub offers a simple, good-value menu. There's nothing self-consciously primped and styled about its interior or its food offerings; it prides itself on not being a gastro-pub but offering good value and plenty of choice. Typical starters include prawn cocktail and breaded mushrooms with garlic mayo. Follow this with minced beef and onion pie; crispy chicken mornay; or local sausages with egg and chips. There's a separate kids' menu and some good vegetarian choices such as Cajun five bean chilli.
