HEYSHOTT, Midhurst, GU29 0DL
Enjoying stunning views of the South Downs from its beautiful, south-facing rear garden, Jenni Halpin's 18th-century free house is the perfect spot to relax on sunny day with a pint of Adnams. This sleepy Sussex village is in the National Park, so it's a fair bet that you'll share the pub with walkers and cyclists (and, of course, some locals) seeking out the home-cooked food listed on seasonal menus that make sound use of locally sourced produce. The bar, with beams and a large log fire, is particularly atmospheric, while the subtly lit, cream-painted restaurant is where you can sample fresh fish from Selsey, or dishes like grilled pork belly with Stilton sauce; rib-eye steak; fish pie; or pheasant breast with apricot and date stuffing. Good sandwiches (perhaps roast beef and horseradish) and popular Sunday lunches complete the pleasing picture.
