Surrounded by farmland and woods, with footpaths for pleasant country walks, and not far from Hadrian's Wall and other Roman sites, this former farmhouse was rebuilt some 400 years ago and has a pretty millstream running right through the gardens. The Dipton Mill is home to Hexhamshire Brewery ales, which include Devil's Water and Whapweasel, plus Blackhall English Stout. All dishes are freshly prepared from local produce where possible, and a wide range of sandwiches includes a gourmet selection. Lunch or dinner could start with smoked salmon and prawns, or soup, and mains might include haddock baked with tomatoes and basil, or lamb steak braised in wine and mustard. A good selection of vegetarian options includes ratatouille with couscous. Dessert brings comforting favourites such as fruit crumble, Pavlova or chocolate rum truffle torte, plus a good selection of Northumberland and Durham cheeses. Salads and ploughman's are always available.
