Farmers Arms

85 Wood Lane, HESKIN, Nr Chorley, PR7 5NP

This fine 17th-century pub used to be called the Pleasant Retreat, but in 1902 the name was changed. Never mind, because this long, creeper-covered building is still pleasant, very pleasant actually, and its flagstoned Vault Bar is still a retreat. Malcolm and Ann Rothwell have been here for a quarter of a century, although son Andrew and his wife Sue are slowly taking over the helm. The menu may include minted lamb cutlets or baked haddock gratin, while the main menu features Cumberland sausage, lasagna verdi, grills and steaks, and a selection of salads, jacket potatoes and sandwiches. Hand-pulled real ales include Silver Tally, named after the token that miners would exchange for a lamp.
