85 Wood Lane, HESKIN, Nr Chorley, PR7 5NP
This fine 17th-century pub used to be called the Pleasant Retreat, but in 1902 the name was changed. Never mind, because this long, creeper-covered building is still pleasant, very pleasant actually, and its flagstone Vault Bar is still a retreat. Malcolm and Ann Rothwell have been here for a quarter of a century, and run it together with their son Andrew who is the chef and daughter-in-law Sue who oversees the restaurant. The menu may include minted lamb cutlets or baked haddock gratin, while the main menu features Cumberland sausage, lasagne verdi, grills and steaks, and a selection of salads, jacket potatoes and sandwiches. Hand-pulled real ales include Silver Tally, named after the token that miners would exchange for a lamp.
