The Cherry Tree Inn

Stoke Row, HENLEY-ON-THAMES, RG9 5QA

Originally three flint cottages, the 400-year-old Cherry Tree's interior has strong colours and modern, comfortable furnishings that look good alongside the original flagstone floors, beamed ceilings and fireplaces. Brakspear's Bitter and Special and seasonal ales are on hand-pump in the bar, where there is also a good range of malt whiskies, chilled vodkas and wines by the glass. An eat-anywhere policy means freedom to enjoy any of the British and European dishes in the bar, restaurant or large garden. Local produce is used throughout the menu, with items such as lobster, oysters and game available in season. Try and decide between a starter of rabbit and black pudding terrine with cherry chutney; or salmon and green bean Thai fishcakes with a green onion salad perhaps, before moving onto red pepper marinated sea bass fillet, crushed potatoes and coriander oil; Barbary duck breast, braised red cabbage and dauphinoise potatoes; or spiced bean goulash, deep fried courgette and tomato bulgar wheat. Desserts are no less tempting - mocha profiteroles dipped in white chocolate; and kiwi and lime cheesecake to name just two. Chalkboards offer daily specials, and Sunday roasts feature Scottish prime beef, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, fresh vegetables and home-made horseradish. Children may eat in the dining rooms until 8pm, choosing from a menu that includes grilled fresh chicken and chips; pork and leek sausages and mash; and fish and chips. The large south-facing garden makes fine-weather dining a pleasure. All around is the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
