Duke of Cumberland Arms

In an absolutely delightful setting, this beautiful, 16th-century pub, perched on a wooded hillside in the South Downs National Park is a real gem. Inside are flagstones, brick floors, scrubbed tables, and ales served straight from the barrels Harvey's and Langham breweries deliver them in. There's a terrace, and the gardens are lovely, with fabulous views of the Weald, pools of trout, and plenty of places to sit, whether you're having a pint or stopping for something more substantial. The first-rate menus impress at lunchtime with braised oxtail, horseradish mash, curly kale and red wine jus; or grilled south coast mackerel fillet open sandwich, while in the evening you might be choosing from salt and pepper squid, garlic mayonnaise, wasabi nut dust and toasted sesame seeds; or pig's head ballotine, smoked potato croquette, quail's egg and brown sauce to start followed by Selsey crab thermidor; or an 8oz grain-fed sirloin steak, with roasted tomato, mixed leaf, peppercorn sauce and chunky chips.
