The Old Black Lion

Close to Lion Gate, one of the original entrances to the old walled town of Hay-on-Wye, parts of this charming whitewashed inn date from the 1300s, although structurally most of it is 17th century. The oak-timbered bar is furnished with scrubbed pine tables, comfy armchairs and a log-burner - perfect for savouring a pint of Wye Valley Bitter. The inn has a long-standing reputation for its food, and the pretty dining room overlooking the garden terrace is where to enjoy grilled mackerel and rhubarb chutney followed by roast pork chop, bubble-and-squeak and Calvados gravy; or roast fillet of salmon, crushed potatoes, mushroom and white wine sauce. Hay, of course, has bookshops at every turn, and it is also home to a renowned annual literary festival.
