The Queen's Head

Rede Road, HAWKEDON, IP29 4NN

Off-the-beaten track by the green in a picture-book village deep in rural Suffolk, The Queen's Head is worth seeking out for its classic 15th-century character and charm - inglenook fireplace, stone floors, head-cracking timbers, scrubbed wooden tables - and top-notch hearty pub food prepared from the best local ingredients. Pork, beef, venison, poultry and wild boar are sourced from local farms - they are hung and butchered at the butcher's shop in the pub grounds. This may translate to venison carpaccio; pork chops with Stilton, pear and sage; and pot-roasted beef with red wine and red onion marmalade; with butterscotch and almond pudding among the desserts. Sunday roast lunches, traditional bar snacks, and pizzas baked in the stone oven complete the culinary picture. A thriving community local, it also offers live music, game and wine tasting dinners and other social evenings.
