The Gray Ox Inn

15 Hartshead Lane, HARTSHEAD, Liversedge, WF15 8AL

Originally a farmhouse that sold ale, this rural inn dating from 1709 occupies a commanding position overlooking the Calder Valley. Ales from Marston's, Jennings and a guest brewery are in the bar, where reminders of the pub's former life can be seen, in winter by the flickering light of the huge log fire. Fine locally-sourced dishes prepared by a five-strong kitchen team include braised pig's cheek terrine, black pudding fritter, apple and vanilla compôte as a starter, followed by roast North Yorkshire venison loin, braised shoulder cottage pie, venison sausage, truffle mash, bubble-and-squeak; or king prawn, cod, sweet potato and chickpea curry. Daily fish specials are also a fixture.
