The Green Dragon Inn

HARDRAW, Hawes, DL8 3LZ

Entering the Bar Parlour is like stepping into a Tudor film-set, although parts of the inn are much older - 13th century in fact. Gravestones, forming part of the floor, were washed away from the neighbouring churchyard during floods. In a wooded site behind is Hardraw Force, England's highest single-drop waterfall, which JMW Turner painted while staying here in 1816. The choice of real ales and ciders is good, and pub food includes home-made steak and kidney pie; lamb shank, mash and veg; and a seasonal dish of pheasant bourguignon with horseradish mash and creamed cabbage. Regular live folk music are big draws.
