Gwaelod-y-Garth Inn

Whoever built this old ale house chose the location well. On the wooded flank of Garth Hill, high above Taffs Well, the views are great; across the vale, for example, is Castell Coch, built in Victorian Gothic Revival style. The Gwaelod, meaning 'foot of the mountain', has its own brewery - Violet Cottage - nicknamed 'The Brew with a View'. Real ciders are local too. Home-cooked dishes feature daily market mussels, hake, salmon, lemon sole and other fish. Meat alternatives include roasted Gressingham duck breast with kumquat and cassis sauce; chicken wrapped in bacon, stuffed with apricot and brie; and salt marsh leg of lamb.
