Formerly a coaching inn, this imposing stone hotel stands below the steep, wooded crags of Froggatt Edge and overlooks the village and the Derwent Valley beyond, and is situated in the heart of the Peak National Park. The capacious beer garden offers stunning panoramas across moorland and river valley. Continuing the Peakland theme, beer from Chatsworth's own estate brewery may be sampled in the Longhaw Bar, where a good value lunch menu might include twice-baked smoked salmon soufflé, or fish and garden pea pie. For some of the best cuisine in the Midlands, however, head for the Maynard Restaurant where chef Ben Hickinson creates menus which have gained two AA Rosettes; rabbit and smoked bacon ravioli with thyme and mustard cream might be followed by venison with baked potato cake and carrot and tarragon purée, or baked sea trout with chive and caviar cream sauce. For pudding, try the warm chocolate tart with red berry sorbet.
