The Highland Drove Inn

On an old drove road, this 300-year-old country inn recalls the long-vanished days when hardy Highland cattle were driven across open water from Scotland's Western Isles to markets in England. A reputation for high-quality food might suggest it's a destination pub, as indeed it is, but it's more than that, because locals love it too, one attraction being a cask-conditioned ale called Kyloes Kushie. The attractive brick and timber bar, where snacks are available, is furnished with old tables and settles; the more formal dining takes place upstairs in the hunting lodge-style restaurant, where a verandah offers fine country views. The kitchen depends on locally-sourced game, fish and meat, examples including venison rendang, an Indonesian curry with coconut milk and spices; Cumbrian lamb shank slow-braised in Guinness; duck breast marinated in pineapple, chilli and soy sauce; and baked fillet of halibut.
