At 400 feet above sea level the 14th-century Star & Eagle has outstanding views of the orchards and hop fields that helped earn Kent the accolade 'The Garden of England'. The vaulted stonework suggests that this rambling, big-beamed building may once have been a monastery, and the tunnel from the cellars probably surfaces underneath the neighbouring parish church. The ten bedrooms and the public rooms boast original features and much character. Adnams and Harveys are the mainstays in the bar, and there's plenty of choice in wines served by the glass. While supping, unwind and enjoy choosing between the fine traditional and continental dishes prepared under the guidance of Spanish chef-proprietor Enrique Martinez. Typical dishes are large grilled Portuguese sardines; and roast pork belly with caramelised apples, dauphinoise potatoes, braised red cabbage and sultanas, and a cream and red wine sauce. Finish with apple, blackberry and hazelnut crumble and custard.
