The Taverners
High Street,
GODSHILL,
PO38 3HZ
The Taverners has filled many roles in its history, including a tea room reputedly graced by a visit from Queen Victoria. Today's pub is run by islanders Roger Serjent and Lisa Choi, who are committed to producing a high-quality menu while keeping their food and drink miles as low as possible. To this end they grow their own vegetables and source as much as they can from the island; meat, poultry, eggs and dairy produce all come from within a couple of miles' radius, whilst seafood arrives from nearby Ventnor and Bembridge. They even advertise for home-grown fruit and vegetables, so local growers drop by to sell their fresh produce. Traditional choices from the menu could be beef and ale pie; or dry-cured ham with eggs and hand-cut chips. The specials board has a selection of dishes made from seasonal produce, and is only written once the deliveries have arrived. An in-pub shop sells home-made food items from the kitchen, fine wines, and island products. In the garden is a toddlers' play area.
