The Taverners
High Street,
GODSHILL,
PO38 3HZ
The Taverners has filled many roles in its history, including village bakehouse, post office, general store and tea room, reputedly graced by a visit from Queen Victoria. Today's pub is run by islanders Roger Serjent and Lisa Choi, who are committed to producing a high-quality menu while keeping their food and drink miles as low as possible. To this end they source as much as they can from the island; meat, poultry, eggs and dairy produce all come from within a couple of miles' radius, whilst seafood arrives from nearby Ventnor and Bembridge. An in-pub shop sells home-made food items from the kitchen, handicrafts, and some of their suppliers' produce. Traditional choices from the menu could be shepherd's pie or macaroni cheese, while the specials board branches out with slow-roast Moor Farm pork cheek with faggot and mash, or Briddlesford veal wrapped in pancetta. In the garden is a toddlers' play area, and a run for the pub's two pet chickens, Sam and Ella.
