The Pheasant

Audley End, Church Street, GESTINGTHORPE, CO9 3AU

A previous winner of the AA Pub of the Year for England, The Pheasant has become a total success story thanks to the dedicaton of hands-on owners James and Diana Donoghue. On the Essex and Suffolk border and surrounded by lovely countryside, this stylish gastro-pub is blessed in that James was an award-winning garden designer and he has created a kitchen garden which now provides a steady and abundant supply of seasonal organic fruit and vegetables for the restaurant. The one-acre garden is located across the road from the pub and produces soft fruits, onions, leeks, artichokes, beetroots, courgettes and various herbs and lettuces. Potatoes destined for the chips, mash and Sunday lunch roasties are grown ten miles away in Wormingford and the kitchen staff peel ten sacks of them a week. Enterprising James even keeps bees and he also smokes his own fish, much of it sourced from south coast day boats and delivered up to four times a week. Starters typically include grilled goats' cheese with a green salad and sweet chilli dressing; and tempura tiger prawns with garlic mayonnaise dip, followed by mains of garlic chicken, new potatoes and kale; Gressingham duck breast with orange and fennel salad; or home-made pie of the day with hand-cut chips. Home-made apple and cider crumble; and sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce and honeycomb crunch ice cream are two typical desserts. Accompany your meal with a pint of Adnams ale or the pub's own Pheasant Bitter, brewed by Woodforde's in Norfolk. Alternatively, enjoy a glass of Suffolk-made Aspall cider.
