The Butchers Arms

FRINGFORD, Bicester, OX27 8EB

Flora Jane Thompson, author of Lark Rise to Candleford, was born at Juniper Hill, a couple of miles from this pretty, creeper-covered pub, and her first job was in the Post Office in Fringford. In her writings, Juniper Hill became Lark Rise, Fringford became Candleford Green, and Buckingham and Banbury metamorphosed into Candleford. Handpumps dispense Doom Bar, Hooky and Black Sheep, while the menu, on chalk boards, offers a good traditional selection including home-made pies; liver, bacon and onions; king prawns; and mussels. There's a senior citizens lunch offer six days a week. You can watch the cricket from the patio and in June there's a beer festival.
