The Watership Down Inn

The downland that Richard Adams made famous in his classic 1972 novel lies four miles north of here. The inn's country-style interior features oak and quarry-tile flooring, a wood-burner and hardwood bar, from where some 100 different locally brewed real ales are offered - over time, of course. The wine list is similarly comprehensive. At lunchtime snails in garlic butter may be available; more conventional possibilities are beer-battered haddock, and home-made pie of the day. Evening choices could well include brie-filled chicken supreme in Parma ham; an 8oz rib-eye steak; and wild mushroom, thyme and pumpkin risotto.
