The Parrot Inn

Overlooking the village green and cricket pitch, this tile-hung Surrey pub is friendly and welcoming. The low-beamed bar, complete with flagstone floor and huge brass fireplace, is delightfully traditional, and French doors lead to a sheltered, paved terrace. Owner Linda Gotto raises rare-breed pigs, Shorthorn cattle and Dorset sheep at her farm in nearby Dorking, and you can buy some of her produce in Butchers Hall, an on-site farm shop. You'll also find it on the plate in the restaurant, along with other quality ingredients. Kick things off with Middle White pork and pistachio terrine with toast and chutney; or pigeon pastrami and buttered kale on toasted rye bread, before a main of chargrilled hogget chops, Lyonnaise potatoes and kale; pot-roasted guinea fowl, chestnut mushrooms, fine beans, baby potatoes and smoked bacon sauce; or herb-baked hake with roasted fennel, white bean and chervil sauce.
