In an upland village surrounded by a lattice-work of dry-stone walls, this 19th-century former coaching inn is the epitome of the English country pub. With open fires, oak beams, flagstone floors, great views, good food and beer, and accommodation, the much used adjective 'traditional' was never more appropriate. The bar stocks Black Sheep and Peak Ales. At lunchtime snacks and sandwiches come to the fore, but a weekly-changing blackboard is the backbone of the dining options. A sizzling crab ramekin makes a great starter, to be followed perhaps by sautéed calves' liver with mushrooms and caramelised onions.
