The Dove Inn

Plum Pudding Lane, Dargate, FAVERSHAM, ME13 9HB

About half-way between Faversham and Whitstable, this single-gabled 18th-century village inn stands amid wooded hills and fruit orchards - this is the Garden of England, after all. Its matchboarded, wooden-floored interior is warmed by a log-burner, creating agreeably comfortable surroundings in which to enjoy a Shepherd Neame ale and AA-Rosette food. A fixed price menu gives ample choice at each stage. Start perhaps with whitebait and tartare sauce; continue with roast turkey breast with roast potatoes and parsnips, buttered carrots and greens; and finish with chocolate chip and orange bread and butter pudding. The carte may proffer home-made salmon fishcake, followed by golonka - the Polish term for ham hock, cooked in Kentish ale and served with home-made sauerkraut. Outside is a gorgeous cottage garden complete, appropriately, with dovecote and doves; and a pitch for summer games of 'bat and trap', an old pub game that survives in Kent.
