The Trout Inn

Buckland Marsh, FARINGDON, SN7 8RF

It's not just trout that grace the walls in this lovely stone pub by an ancient bridge over the River Thames; for instance, there's a rather fine rhino-headed lamp bracket and sundry stags' heads too. The Trout is inevitably popular with boaters, and walkers from the Thames Path that runs along the bank opposite the pub's garden, a pleasant space clearly intended for those nursing a pint of locally brewed Abingdon Bridge, Ramsbury Bitter or Wayland Smithy, or a chilled Pinot Grigio. Maintaining the menu requires fish and seafood to arrive daily from Cornwall, game from area shoots, and fruit, herbs and vegetables from local growers. Try charred pollack Thai curry with pak choi and pistachios; guinea fowl with sweet potato and buttered leeks; or chargrilled rainbow trout with crayfish butter and fries. Kelmscott Manor, the remarkable home of 19th-century artist and designer, William Morris, is up the road.
