EASTON, Winchester, SO21 1EG
This gem of a 16th-century pub has an abundance of traditional English character and atmosphere. Old tankards hang from the low-beamed ceilings in the two bar areas, and a large open fire is the central focus through the winter months. Hall and Woodhouse beers, such as Pickled Partridge and Chestnut Horse Special, along with Westons ciders, can be enjoyed in the bar or the garden. Carte food choices are several cuts above the average. An indicative starter and main course could be venison carpaccio with Asian salad and gremolata dressing; and rigatoni with local Hampshire 'quattro formaggi' cream sauce, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and truffle oil. The two-course fixed-price lunch menu represents excellent value.
