The Green, EAST KNOYLE, Salisbury, SP3 6BN
This partly thatched and half-timbered, rustic 15th-century inn makes the most of its stunning Blackmore Vale location. There are exceptional views from the patio beer garden and nearby East Knoyle village green across these Wiltshire and Dorset boundary-lands, where Sir Christopher Wren was born and the family of Jane Seymour (Henry VIII's third wife) were based. Hidden in a timeless village on a greensand ridge, the engaging exterior is well matched by the atmospheric interior, with lots of flagstone flooring, wood-burning fires and restful stripped wood furniture. Locals eager to partake of Thatchers Cheddar Valley cider or Hop Back Crop Circle rub shoulders with diners keen to make the acquaintance of the eclectic menu. Blackboard menus increase the choice, dependant entirely on the availability of the freshest local fare. Starters might include lightly dusted calamari with garlic mayonnaise; and deep-fried rosemary and garlic crusted brie wedges with cranberry jelly. When it comes to main courses, good, wholesome pub grub like fish pie; chicken pie with chips and vegetables and home-made sausages, mash and gravy share the board with lamb shank braised in red wine; slow-roasted belly pork with an apple and cider sauce; duck breast with damson sauce and spring onion mash; or murgh makhani, basmati rice and chota naan. Baked pizzas and a comprehensive children's menu add to the fray, whilst desserts include lemon posset and shortbread or rhubarb and apple crumble with vanilla ice cream. There is also a gluten-free chocolate fondant and ice cream.
