Hardwick Inn
Hardwick Park,
DOE LEA,
Nr Chesterfield,
S44 5QJ
Dating from the 15th century and built of locally quarried sandstone, this striking building was once the lodge from Hardwick Hall (NT) and stands at the south gate of Hardwick Park. Owned by the Batty family for three generations, the pub has a rambling interior and features period details such as mullioned windows, oak beams and stone fireplaces. Traditional food takes in a popular daily carvery roast, a salad bar, hearty home-made pies, pot roasts and casseroles, as well as selections of fish and vegetarian dishes. A handy pit-stop for M1 travellers.

Good ambience, good service but the food was huge bulk without finesse. The sauce on the trout could have been fined under the trades description act! Where were the prawns, crayfish tails and lobster? Or had they been emusified into the thin, tasteless wash? A sandwich next time I think. We all left a lot on our plates.
