Horsefair, DEDDINGTON, OX15 0SH
Overlooking Deddington's pretty market square, this striking 16th-century former coaching inn boasts a wealth of timbering, flagstone floors, numerous nooks and crannies, crackling winter log fires and sought-after window seats in the beamed bar. Here you can savour a glass of Hook Norton or Somersby cider while perusing the menu. Eat in the bar or head for the elegant dining room, where you can kick off a meal with feta and tabouleh salad; or smoked halibut with shaved fennel and orange. Continue with another fish course - baked fillet of cod with Puy lentils, wilted greens and parsley juice. Desserts are old favourites ranging from black cherry and dark chocolate baked Alaska to sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream. The cheese selection tempts with notable products from around the UK, such as Colston Bassett Stilton, Welsh Bomber Cheddar, Miss Muffet from Cornwall, Waterloo from Berkshire and North Yorkshire's Ribblesdale.
