The rather cute explanation for the pub's name is that a fox being chased by the local hunt ran into the cellar, where the landlord gave it sanctuary. And who's to say otherwise? Restored and refreshed features include a huge open log fire, old beams and half-panelled walls; the snug bar is the perfect spot for a pint of Weetwood. Classic pub food includes Cumberland sausage and mash with onion gravy; fish pie; and spicy vegetable and chickpea hotpot. Outside is a secluded landscaped garden surrounded by unspoilt Cheshire countryside.
