The Chequers Brasserie

Tucked away between Marlow and Maidenhead, The Chequers is in one of the prettiest villages in the Thames Valley. Striking Victorian and Edwardian villas around the green set the tone, while the surrounding wooded hills and dales have earned Cookham Dean a reputation as a centre for wonderful walks. Wooden beams, an open fire and comfortable seating welcome drinkers to the small bar, perhaps to sample Rebellion's fine ales. Dining takes place in the older part of the building, or in the conservatory; a private dining room can be reserved for parties. The menus of expertly prepared dishes are based on fresh, quality ingredients enhanced by careful use of cosmopolitan flavours. A starter of Scotch duck egg, black pudding, red onion jam and a balsamic reduction could be followed by seafood risotto; butternut squash and wild mushroom linguine; or chicken breast wrapped in Parma ham with cream Savoy cabbage and fondant potato.
