The Ostrich

High Street, COLNBROOK, SL3 0JZ

Close to Heathrow and just minutes from the motorway, stands, surprisingly, one of England's oldest pubs. Dating from 1106 and once a coaching inn on the old London-Bath road, the vast and rambling Ostrich oozes history (some tales are particularly gruesome), with its heavily timbered fašade, cobbled courtyard and an interior filled with wonky oak beams, massive fireplaces and crooked stairs. Cross Oak Inns have designed it in contemporary style, so expect glass doors, a steel bar, chunky furnishings and vibrant colours. Equally modern, the menu takes in chicken terrine with rustic bread, pork belly with cider jus, and milk chocolate fondant.
