Coldharbour Lane, COLDHARBOUR, nr Dorking, RH5 6HD
Set in the heart of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this charming 17th-century coaching inn has been brought bang up to date. Since John and Becky Hopper took it over in September 2015, refurbishment has created a new bar, kitchen and shop; even the car park has been greatly improved. Nearby Leith Hill, the highest point in south-east England at 965 feet, makes the pub a popular watering hole for walkers and cyclists needing sustenance after their exertions. The hill lends its name to the pub's own on-site craft brewery. The menu proffers good country fare sourced locally if possible, so start with potted crab with chive butter and granary toast, and continue with lamb rump, served pink, with Moroccan couscous and herb-whipped Greek yogurt; and finish with lemon and lime cheesecake. Lighter lunches include a ploughman's and assorted sandwiches.
