Chapel Road, COLCHESTER, CO5 7BG
This Grade II listed 18th-century free house enjoys beautiful views from its position at the top of the Roman River Valley. Its name comes from the bones of a locally beached whale, which were once fastened above the door of the pub. Wooden floors, exposed beams, bespoke furniture, a roaring fire and unique artwork all combine to create a feeling of warmth and character. Hearty British fare is prepared from local ingredients, along with Adnams and Woodforde's ales. A lunchtime snack can be enjoyed in one of the garden pavilions. The menu options smoked haddock, red gurnard and leek chowder; twice-cooked crispy Suffolk pork belly; and four-hour-cooked rich cottage pie.
