Until he was eight, the poet William Wordsworth lived next door, although then this 17th-century building was a private house. Much remains to remind us of its heritage: stone walls, exposed beams, marble fireplaces, restored plasterwork, period stained-glass, and a carefully-preserved oak staircase. At the bar ales from town brewery Jennings are joined by Carlisle-brewed guest, Corby Blonde. Fresh, locally sourced ingredients drive the menu, from smoked haddock fishcake, made with Thornby Moor Stumpies goats' cheese, to Cumbrian beef sirloin fajitas. A drink or a meal in the gardens overlooking the River Derwent is an enjoyable way of passing time.
