The Tunnel House Inn

Tarlton Road, COATES, Cirencester, GL7 6PW

Down an unmade track, this rural inn was built for the navvies who spent five years constructing the two-mile long Sapperton Tunnel on the now-disused Thames and Severn Canal. The inn overlooks the entrance to the tunnel which hasn't been navigated by a barge since 1911. Three winter log fires warm the curio-filled bar, where oddities include an upside-down table suspended from the ceiling. Food, all home cooked, is served every day from noon onwards and you may eat in the bar or restaurant, starting perhaps with pheasant, lardons and plum mixed leaf salad with redcurrant and balsamic reduction; or potted salt beef served with toasted brioche, pickled onions and gherkins. A typical spring menu might offer main courses of goats' cheese and thyme-stuffed chicken breast, wrapped in smoked bacon, with creamy red pesto linguine; baked smoked haddock stuffed with spinach and pine nuts on a bed of lemon and thyme risotto; and wild mushroom, leek and blue cheese puff pastry pie with sweet potato wedges and parsnip crisps. Apple and red berry crumble with crème anglaise may appear on the desserts list, while Cotswold ice creams almost certainly will. At lunchtime eat more simply with a hot panini or a mature cheddar or Stilton ploughman's. The garden is tailor-made for relaxing with a pint of one of the mostly local real ales - typically from Uley, Wye Valley and Hook Norton breweries - or a Somerset or Herefordshire real cider, while enjoying the views over the fields. A beer and cider festival in August, a children's play area and delightful walks add to the pub's popularity.
