The Five Bells Inn

CLYST HYDON, Cullompton, EX15 2NT

The pub and the church were neighbours until early last century, when the rector's objections forced the inn to move into this old thatched farmhouse, its new name intended as a raspberry to the rector. Otter and Butcombe real ales hold sway in the bar - note the original counter. Exposed brick and cream-papered walls are adorned with signed Exeter Chiefs rugby shirts, and there's a German-style 'stammtisch', or regulars' table. Simple pub food includes home-made Scotch duck egg; home-cured wild Escot venison; lightly curried Skrei cod fillet; and River Exe mussels in Berry Farm cider. The inn is very child friendly. The beer festival is held during the second week of August.
