Pook Lane, East Lavant, CHICHESTER, PO18 0AX
Starting life two centuries ago as a farmhouse, the Royal Oak is set within the South Downs National Park and is just up the hill from Goodwood racecourse; it is also perfectly situated for the nearby cathedral city of Chichester. The creeper-clad Georgian inn is at the heart of the beautiful, historic village of East Lavant and is known for offering great food to visitors and locals alike. The brick-lined restaurant and beamed bar achieve a crisp, rustic brand of chic: details include chunky wooden tables, leather chairs, open fires, fresh flowers, candles, and wine attractively displayed in alcoves set into the walls. Local Sussex Gold and Horsham Best ales, whiskies and Gospel Green Champagne cider are among the thirst-quenchers on offer. The seasonal menu is an easy mix of modern European dishes and English classics with a twist, and much of the produce is grown by villagers in return for pints. The lovely patio is the perfect place to enjoy pork and apricot ballotine, with spiced apricot compôte; or beetroot, orange and sorrel risotto perhaps accompanied by one of the 20 wines by the glass. Progress then to a main dish of guinea fowl breast, rösti potatoes, wilted greens with pancetta and wild mushroom jus; seared hake, white bean, chorizo and fennel cassoulet; or a 28-day aged rib-eye steak, thick hand cut chips, baked cherry tomatoes, roast field mushroom with a choice of sauces. Typical desserts are mascarpone and blueberry cheesecake with hedgerow compôte; and Madagascan vanilla seed crème brûlée. There are luxury guest rooms with large, comfortable beds and en suite bathrooms.
