1 Russell Street, CHESTER, CH3 5AL
Housed in a former Victorian chandler's warehouse beside the Shropshire Union Canal, the tall windows, lofty ceilings, wooden floors and bar constructed from salvaged doors make this one of Chester's more unusual pubs. The bar offers over 100 malt whiskies and ales from a range of breweries. The daily-changing menu from light dishes such as Vietnamese noodle salad through to main courses like slow-cooked beef cheeks, horseradish and tarragon mash, purple sprouting broccoli and rich red wine sauce; honey-roasted ham (served cold) with free-range eggs and chips; roast cod loin, creamed leeks, chargrilled new potatoes and watercress sauce. The pub holds events such as 'Pudding, Pie and Great British Beers Week' in February or March time, where over 20 award-winning ales can be tried, plus a 'Pie and Champion Ale' week in October.
