Sheep Street, CHARLBURY, Nr Chipping Norton, OX7 3RR
Presiding over Charlbury's main street, this handsome stone-fronted 16th-century free house, now with new owners, is a conveniently short hop from Woodstock, Blenheim Palace and other attractions of the Cotswolds. Outside, their vine-covered terrace is a lovely backdrop for a drink or meal in summer. The bar offers Bull Bitter (brewed for the pub) and weekly guest ales. The concise menus might feature beetroot- and gin-cured salmon, cucumber and horseradish cream; steak tartare, cornichons, capers and crème fraîche; local venison, green wheat, spinach and rose harissa; or gilt-head bream, purple sprouting broccoli, samphire and caper butter. For dessert perhaps, forced rhubarb and pear crumble and vanilla ice cream; or sticky toffee pudding, toffee sauce and clotted cream.
