The Red Lion

CHALTON, Waterlooville, PO8 0BG

Said to be the oldest pub in Hampshire, dating back to 1147, when it was built to house craftsmen constructing St Michael's church opposite. It retains an olde worlde English charm, from the thatched roof and whitewashed exterior to the brass knick-knacks, timbered beams and roaring fires inside. To one side a large purpose-built dining room is kept busy serving plates of pub grub. The expansive garden gives lovely views of the South Downs. Inside or out, and now under new management, this is a peaceful place to enjoy a Fuller's ale, or a bottle of Kopparberg cider for a change.
