The Red Lion

CHALTON, Waterlooville, PO8 0BG

The Red Lion is said to be the oldest pub in Hampshire, dating back to 1147, when it was used as a residential workshop for the builders at St Michael's church opposite. It retains an olde worlde English charm, from the thatched roof and whitewashed exterior to the brass knick-knacks, timbered beams and roaring fires inside. The expansive garden features stunning panoramic views of the South Downs, a lovely place to enjoy one of the Fuller's ales on offer - Seafarers, HSB or London Pride plus there are guest ales and a beer festival at the end of July. The tempting thrice-weekly changing menu uses local ingredients where possible. Duck and pork terrine, cranberries, pistachios, red onion chutney and toasted bloomer might precede pan-fried calves' liver bacon, chive mash and onion gravy or a pub classic of ham, egg, chips and beans.
