Stockton Road, CASTLE EDEN, TS27 4SD
The village of Castle Eden was mentioned in the Domesday Book (although it seems there is no evidence that there was a castle there at the time) and the inn dates from the 18th century. You'll find Castle Eden Ale and Timothy Taylor Landlord in the bar, and the kitchen has certainly built a good reputation for dishes such as ox tongue, pickles and croûtons; North Sea smoked salmon and prawn fishcakes with sweetcorn chowder; bacon and black pudding salad with free-range poached egg; and marmalade roast bacon loin, mustard mash and leeks. The pub's events calendar is pretty full and includes a beer festival in early summer.
