Castle at Edgehill

EDGEHILL, nr Banbury, OX15 6DJ

In 1742, a man called Sanderson Miller built this curious castellated property on top of Edgehill to mark the centenary of the English Civil War's first major skirmish. In 1822 it became an alehouse; fast-forward a hundred years and it was acquired by the Hook Norton Brewery, whose real ales you'll find to this day in the two bars. There are four dining areas including a glass-protected balcony with panoramic views. The modern menus are inviting and include dishes such as potted Cornish crab, mushroom loaf and samphire cream; and blade of beef, horseradish purée, shallots, broad beans, onion rings and garlic potato.
