CAREY, HR2 6NG
Lost along narrow lanes in bucolic countryside close to the meandering River Wye, this pretty streamside inn (with lovely views from the garden) has been licensed for 530 years. Now, as then, local ciders and beers flow from the bar which boasts log fire and flagged floors, with heavy timbering and traditional furnishings. Making the most of the county's produce, the concise menu might offer chicken liver, pork and brandy pâté, or goats' cheese and red onion marmalade tartlet; followed by Cajun-spiced chicken breast, bacon-wrapped green beans and sweet potatoes; or griddled Hereford fillet steak with all the trimmings. Save room for the rich chocolate pot with Baileys cream and chocolate biscotti. The pub opens at 5.30 on Fridays, with a tapas menu available from 5.30-7pm.
