The Royal Oak

CARDINGTON, Church Stretton, SY6 7JZ

Reputedly the oldest continuously licensed pub in Shropshire and set in a conservation village, this free house can trace its roots to the 15th century. The rambling low-beamed bar with vast inglenook (complete with cauldron, black kettle and pewter jugs) and comfortable beamed dining room are refreshingly undisturbed by music, TV or games machines. Choose from the excellent cask ales and ponder your choice of sustenance: good-value home-made fare includes devilled kidneys with home-made onion rings; Shropshire fidget pie (gammon cooked with spiced cider and apples with a puff pastry top); fish pie; and mushroom and spinach lasagne.
