CAIRNDOW, PA26 8BN
On the upper reaches of Loch Fyne, this old coaching inn offers plenty of fine views of mountains, magnificent woodlands and rivers. Sample one of many malt whiskies in the friendly bar by the roaring fire, or idle away the time in the loch-side garden watching the oyster-catchers while sipping the local Fyne Ales. The menu in the candlelit Stables Restaurant offers steak and Fyne Ale pie; chicken breast stuffed with smoked Scottish cheddar and ham, wrapped in pancetta; roasted pepper, courgette and wild mushroom risotto; and pan-fried venison steak with shallot, mushroom and smoked bacon red wine sauce. Meals are also served all day in the bar and lounges. Accommodation is available if you would like to stay over and explore the area. On your way to the pub you should look out for Britain's tallest tree (Ardkinglas Grand Fir), which is taller than Nelson's Column.
